[00:00] i'm here to talk about success [00:02] [Music] [00:05] the first rule of success is to have a [00:07] vision [00:09] you see if you don't have a vision of [00:11] where you go and if you don't have a [00:13] goal where you go [00:14] you drift around and you never end up [00:16] anywhere [00:18] i mean as you know i was born in 1947 in [00:21] austria after the second world war [00:24] so i was very fortunate [00:26] that i stumbled under my vision [00:30] and i didn't really like austria when i [00:32] grew up [00:34] i couldn't wait to get out of there [00:36] i couldn't see myself becoming a farmer [00:40] or a worker in a factory [00:42] or anything like that [00:44] even though my parents wanted me to stay [00:46] there and have a normal life [00:48] but that was their vision not mine [00:51] my vision was totally different i felt [00:53] that i was born for something special [00:55] for something unique for something big [00:58] then one day i went to school i remember [01:00] was 11 years old [01:03] and they showed a documentary about [01:04] america [01:07] there they showed this documentary the [01:08] huge skyscrapers [01:11] the high rises [01:13] the huge bridges [01:15] the six lane freeways [01:18] and all of this stuff in this emissive [01:20] that's where i want to be [01:22] [Music] [01:23] i don't want to be around here with [01:24] these little farm houses and these [01:26] little buildings i want to be in america [01:29] one day after school i walked by a store [01:32] in graz [01:33] so i went inside and i looked around and [01:35] then i saw a magazine [01:37] there's a bodybuilding magazine that had [01:39] reg park on the cover [01:42] reg park was then a three-time mr [01:44] universe [01:45] and i saw him on the big screen as [01:47] hercules [01:48] i read that and i said to myself wow [01:52] this is the blueprint for my life [01:55] this is exactly what i want to do [01:58] i want to become a bodybuilding champion [02:00] just like rage park [02:01] i want to get into movies just like rich [02:03] park [02:04] and i want to make millions of dollars [02:06] and be rich and famous [02:08] just like reg park [02:10] do you know how great it felt [02:12] that i knew where i was going [02:16] imagine the majority of people don't [02:17] know where they're going [02:19] i knew where i was going [02:21] that i'm going to become this [02:22] bodybuilding champion just like him [02:25] so it was just a question of how do you [02:27] do it [02:28] i was so relieved [02:30] because when you have a goal when you [02:32] have a vision everything becomes [02:34] easy so people always ask me when they [02:38] saw me in the gym in the pumping iron [02:40] days [02:41] they say why is it that you're working [02:43] out so hard [02:45] five hours a day six hours a day and you [02:48] have always a smile on your face [02:50] and i told people all the time i said [02:52] because to me [02:53] i'm shooting for gold [02:56] in front of me is the mr universe title [03:00] so every rep that i do gets me closer to [03:02] accomplishing that chord to make this [03:04] core this vision turn into reality [03:08] every single set that i do [03:10] every repetition every weight that i [03:12] lift will get me a step closer to turn [03:14] the score in the reality [03:17] so i couldn't wait to do another 500 [03:19] pound squat i couldn't wait to do [03:21] another 500 pound bench press i couldn't [03:24] wait to do another 2 000 reps of sit-ups [03:27] i couldn't wait for the next exercise [03:29] with the age of 20 i went to london and [03:32] i wanted to miss the universe contest as [03:34] the youngest mr universe ever [03:37] and it was because [03:38] i had a goal [03:40] [Applause] [03:42] so let me tell you something visualizing [03:44] your goal and going after it makes it [03:46] fun you've got to have a purpose no [03:49] matter what you do in life you've got to [03:51] have a purpose [03:54] [Music] [03:57] 74 percent [03:59] hate their job in america [04:02] now there's not much different when you [04:03] come to europe [04:05] the majority of people don't like what [04:07] they're doing [04:09] because they're really not doing it [04:10] because they didn't have a goal and they [04:12] followed the score they just aimlessly [04:15] drift around and then all of a sudden if [04:16] there's a job opening so they get their [04:18] job because you have to work [04:21] but then when you work it's a chore [04:24] it's work [04:26] it's not fun so if you think about only [04:29] a quarter of the people really enjoy [04:31] what they're doing in life [04:34] that is unbelievable if you think about [04:35] it so i felt so blessed that i knew what [04:38] i was doing [04:39] it's like a medical student that studies [04:42] and knows he wants to become a doctor [04:43] you know where to go [04:45] and the same thing is also in politics [04:48] i remember that in politics i had a very [04:51] clear vision [04:52] [Music] [04:54] that i will be the leader of california [04:57] this is as far as i could go because i [04:58] was not born in america so i could not [05:00] run for president [05:02] so being the governor of the fifth [05:04] largest state [05:07] of i should say the largest state the [05:08] fifth largest economy in the world [05:12] was for me really [05:14] the ultimate title the ultimate [05:16] accomplishment in politics [05:18] so even though people came up to me and [05:19] says why don't you go [05:21] and run for something smaller you're [05:23] never gonna make it [05:25] i ran for governor and then two months [05:27] later i became governor of the state of [05:28] california [05:30] again because i had a very clear vision [05:32] what i'm gonna do with california [05:35] [Applause] [05:39] so that's rule number one [05:41] have a vision [05:43] rule number two is [05:44] don't listen to the naysayers [05:48] don't listen to the naysayers [05:55] everything i ever did [05:57] the thing that they heard out of [05:58] people's mouth was that's impossible [06:01] [Music] [06:02] that can't be done [06:04] or no [06:06] that is exactly what i heard and of [06:08] course i proved to the people that it [06:09] can't be done [06:11] so whenever someone said to me [06:14] it can't be done i heard it can be done [06:17] when they said no i heard yes [06:20] and when they said it's impossible i [06:22] heard it is possible [06:26] i'm a strong believer what nelson [06:28] mandela said [06:30] that everything is always impossible [06:32] until someone does it [06:35] well i'm gonna be the one who said to [06:37] myself i'm gonna do it and i'm gonna [06:39] show it to them maybe it has never been [06:40] done before [06:42] that's perfectly fine with me [06:44] but i'm gonna do it [06:46] and i did not listen to the naysayers [06:51] it's all about the hard work that you [06:52] put in [06:53] i said i must have been bodybuilding i [06:55] worked [06:56] out five six hours a day i'm gonna do [06:58] the same thing now for acting [07:03] and of course i went to college to study [07:05] english [07:07] i studied the [07:09] accent removal [07:11] acting classes [07:13] and all of this stuff [07:15] all day long [07:16] i worked and i worked in the work [07:18] [Music] [07:20] and within a short period of time i made [07:22] one movie called hercules in new york [07:25] which of course went right into the [07:27] toilet [07:29] but it didn't discourage me i still had [07:31] the same vision [07:33] and then all of a sudden i did streets [07:35] of san francisco [07:37] i did stay hungry and pumping on [07:40] and the villain and then all of a sudden [07:43] i was asked by dino de laurentiis at the [07:45] universal studio to star in conan the [07:48] barbarian [07:51] and after i did conan the barbarian the [07:54] director at the press conference said to [07:56] the press [07:59] the director was john millius [08:01] he said to the press if we wouldn't have [08:03] had arnold we would have had to build [08:05] one [08:07] so think about that [08:12] the very body [08:13] that they said [08:15] can never be sold because the time is [08:18] wrong [08:19] a few years later [08:21] i'm doing conan the barbarian and it was [08:23] the number one hit at the box office [08:25] when it came out [08:26] in the summer of 82. [08:29] think about that and the director says [08:31] if we wouldn't have had his body we [08:33] would have had to build one [08:35] so all of a sudden [08:37] my body became an asset not a liability [08:40] and the same thing was with terminator [08:42] after we were finished filming [08:43] terminator jim cameron said to the press [08:47] if arnold wouldn't have had that accent [08:49] and talked like a machine [08:51] i think the movie wouldn't have [08:52] worked so think about that [08:55] the body and the accent that they [08:58] attacked was an asset [09:02] but i didn't listen to those losers [09:05] i didn't listen to them at all it's just [09:08] the reality of it is that you cannot [09:10] listen to the naysayers so this is a [09:12] very important lesson for all of you so [09:15] when someone says no this is a stupid [09:17] idea [09:18] you in your mind you don't have to say [09:20] but your mind to say this of you you saw [09:24] what do you know [09:28] [Applause] [09:30] [Music] [09:31] [Applause] [09:35] [Music] [09:51] [Music] [10:00] you
